Mattress Foundation

Foundations do three things for a mattress. First, they ensure proper air circulation, thereby discouraging mold and mildew. Second, they provide fabric-to-fabric contact so your mattress doesn't rub against rough surfaces such as wood or metal. Finally, they allow you to adjust your mattress height from the floor.

Box-Spring Foundation*
Built with steel springs and cabinet-grade untreated wood slats, wrapped with our certified organic cotton canvas, padded with sanitized certified organic cotton batting, and upholstered with the same certified organic cotton fabric as our mattresses.

*When paired with a REST® mattress, our Box-Spring Foundation requires a Supplemental Foundation Layer (SFL). See below for details.

Wood-Slat Foundation*
Made of cabinet-grade, kiln-dried untreated wood slats, then wrapped with our certified organic cotton canvas, padded with organic cotton layers, and upholstered with the same certified organic cotton fabric as our mattresses. Wood-slat foundations offer a firm support that is ideal for our mattresses.

Supplemental Foundation Layer (SFL)™

The Rossa™ and Stella™ mattresses may require a unique foundation...


The coil springs used in most supporting box springs are approximately 3” in diameter. Although many more pocket coils are used in the Rossa™ and Stella™ than are used in other mattresses, their diameter is closer to 1 1/4”. What this means is that to prevent the pocket coils from resting on an unsupported space, our SFL™ is required on all box springs and on wood slat foundations with spacing between the slats greater than 1”.

​

These mattresses can also be used on wood-slat bed frames, as long as the distance between slats is no more than 1” and the slats are padded (even an old blanket should work, depending on its thickness). Please contact your local retailer if you have any questions regarding an appropriate support system for your mattress.
